New Champions DivisionUpdated Thursday January 24, 2019 by TYBL Board.
We are excited to announce our Inaugural Season for our new Challenger Division!
The Challenger Division provides an environment where everyone can play and is part of a team, and parents who often feel isolated can network and find comfort in each other’s company. Playing sports can help kids gain self-esteem, independence and form friendships with other kids.
This is a basketball division is designed for children ages 5-18 with Special Needs who live with physical or mental challenges. This is a division designed for those children to participate in a sports environment structured for their success.
Teams will be split according to size / age and the rules are more laid back than a typical game of basketball. The Challenger Division’s aim is for participants to have fun while learning the game of basketball. Players will work on skill building which provides an essential opportunity for kids to develop stronger emotional and social skills while working as a team.
Challenger basketball stresses participation not competition. "Buddies" will be on hand if needed to provide encouragement, direction and assistance to the players.
Who can participate in the Challenger Program?
Any child with a physical or intellectual challenge may participate. If a child can participate in the traditional Basketball program with reasonable accommodations, they should do so. The Challenger Division accommodates both boys and girls ages 5-18.
Is there a cost to participate in the Challenger Program?
Registration costs are only $40, a fee which will help us offset the cost of providing uniforms.
How long is the season?
Pending Gym availability the season can tentatively run from October through February.
What rules are followed during a Challenger game?
Flexibility and adaptability are key during Challenger games.
What are “buddies” and what role do they have in the Challenger Division?
Buddies are individuals who assist Challenger athletes, but only as needed. Buddies may be parents, friends, coaches or TYBL Volunteers.
How can I get involved with the Challenger Division?
There are many ways for everyone to get involved with the Challenger Division. You can volunteer to be a coach, a player's buddy, offer support in recruitment of players and help spread the word about the Challenger Division throughout our community.
